SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

Ideal conditions prevailed for the Palmerston North Amateur Swimming Club’s Carnival at the municipal baths last evening. There was a good attendance, some fine finishes-were witliessod, and good times were recoided. Prior to the first race, Mr A. D. Campbell, vice-president of the club, thanked the public for their support. “We are not so fortunate as other towns,” said Mr Campbell, “in that we have not tepid baths as yet,, and there are really only two months. of the year that are suitable for swimming. The matter of Hie baths is to be placed before the Borough Council and it is hoped that it will receive the support "of the public.” Mr Campbell next thanked the officials of the club for their excellent work, and Mr ami Mrs McLeod, tho caretakers of the baths, for their courtesy in preparing the baths for the carnival. At the St. Clair Swimming Club’s carnival last niglit, in fresh water baths, W. Cameron, the Wellington intermediate representative, swam a magnificent race in the 50 yards final in which lie was conceding as much as 9sec. He won by half a yard in the great time of 24. l-ssec. His swimming was very impressive. Miss Kathleen Miller, the New Zealand ladies’ 220 and 440 yards champion, dead-heated for first place in the 66 2-3 yards ladies’ handicap with Miss C. Lang to whom she conceded 13see. Mis', Miller registered tho fast time of 43sec.
