SUBMARINE SUNK
COLLISION WITH DESTROYER. FATE OF CREW IN DOUBT. t FORTY-THREE OFFICERS AND MEN. . v (By Telegraph.—Copyright.) - NEW YORK, Dec. 18. A message from Provincetown, on Cape Cod Harbour, Massachusetts, states that submarine S 4 was rammed and sunk to-day, in 100 feet of water, through coming intp collision with the destroyer Paulding, of the anti-rum running patrol. Seven hours after the collision the fate of 43 officers and men was still in doubt. The Navy Department believes that the men can only be alive if the craft itself is not seriously damaged. Boats that have cruised about the spot where it sank found no survivors, indicating perhaps that the hull of the vessel had not been .pierced. The Paulding was beached at Provincetown harbour, with the hull badly damaged. One member of the crew was seriously scalded by an exploding steam pipe. Vessels with salvage equipment are speeding from Boston and New York to the spot. Efforts were made without response to establish communication with or raise the sunken craft. The high seas indicate that rescue work will be hampered.—A. and N.Z. cable. LITTLE HOPE HELD. SEVERAL VESSELS-AT THE SCENE. Received December 19, 10.40 a.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 18. A message from Provincetown, Massachusetts states that little hope is held for the rescue of the crew of the submarine S 4. Twelve divers are attempting to establish contact and attach. hausers to the vessel. The sea continues rough and choppy, and the temperature is at freezing point. Fifteen vessels and five aeroplanes are at the scene of the work. Cqastguard officials said that bubbles of oil rose for two hours from the spot above the submarine, which is considered an ominous sign and indicating that a hole has been torn in S 4. The craft is lying on a muddy, spongy bottom.—A. and N.Z. cable.
