SUNKEN SUBMARINE.
WORK OF RESCUE. SIGNS OF LIFE INSIDE VESSEL. Received December 19, 2.10 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 18. Captain Brume, commanding the group engaged in salvaging the submarine S 4 which was sunk in Capo Cod Harbour, reported to the Navy Department that signs of life were heard inside the vessel. He said that they were responses to the diver tapping on the torpedo room. A hole eight feet wide was found on the starboard side of the battery room. The men are believed to be living except those in the battery room where they died in the crash.
The tangled wires prevent tapping at the control room and other compartments.—A. and N.Z. cable.
