MORE NIGHT TRAINS.
NOT PRACTICABLE' AT PRESENT.
Representations were recently made by Sir George Hunter and Messrs H. M. Campbell and J. Mason, M.P.’s, regarding the running of a night express train between Wellington and Napier and between Wellington and New Plymouth. _ The Minister of Railways has written stating that the request has been given sympathetic consideration, but it is considered that the additional traffic likely to be induced by such trains would be quite insufficient to warrant the heavy expense in running them. The cost of running such trains would be heavy as in addition to train staffs additional men would have to be employed in consequence of the extension of the working hours at stations. Night rates of pay would hgve lo be paid, and there would be further expense in connection with the provision of sleeping cars. It was therefore not practicable to provide night express trains at present.
