RACING NEWS.

FIXTURES.

November 30, December. 1, Feilding

R C December 2,3, South Canterbury R.C. December 7,8, Woodvillo District R.C.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(Bv “Binocular”) Concluding day at Feilding to-morrow.

Nominations for all events at the Christmas meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club; also forfeit of 1 sov for the 22nd Palmerston North Stakes, close at 9 p.m. on December 2.

Tho local horseman, T. Green, who is rapidly overhauling A. E. Ellis at the head of the jockoys’ championship, enjoyed a very fair innings at tho Takapuna meeting on Saturday and Monday for, in addition to several minor placings, ho rode 2i winners the first day and one on the second. Wiggins, KlcTavish and Koesing each added two championship points at the fixture

Borealone’s dividend at Ashhurst caused quite a sensation in racing circles, and at the Takapuna meeting on Saturday Macroom went close to emulating the performance when, ranking 18th favourite, the Archiestown filly just failed to annex a clear cut victory, Ti Tree getting up a few strides from homo to make a dead heat. Had Macroom won outright, her dividend would have been considerably more than half a century.

Mr D. Potter, tho owner of Monetize, has temporarily lost tho services of the youngster owing to his having ricked hie off fore fetlock joint. It is staled that it is doubtful whether he will bo right by tho Now Year, which is all tho more unfortunate as the Paper Money representative had been showing marked promise in private.

Peneus, who sustained an injury at New Zoaland Cup time which prevented him racing at Riccarton, is now reported to have made a good recovery and to have re-joined Miss Maher’s team. The Provocation gelding Hillation has, however, been turned out for a long spell.

Paperchasc and Footfall figure among the nominations for the principal events at the Dunedin meeting at Christmas time. The southern fixture coincides with the Auckland one, but probably the opinions of the respective weight adjusters will determine what action is taken.

The Riccarton mentor G. J. Pine is reported to have his team doing good work at present. Silver Coot, Fair Exchange, Money Mart and tho two-year-old Noteworthy will probably bo found racing at tiio South Canterbury meeting.

A Christchurch paper mentions that it is probable that F. D. Jones will bring Stormy, Arikiwai and Island Fastness north for the holiday meetings to race at Manawatu and Marlon.

Riccarton 6tables are not particularly well represented at tho Dunedin meeting, comments a Christchurch scribe. The list includes lvoauau, Tarlcton, Armchair, Bronstell, I.uminant, Rotor, Kate Kelly, Louise, Merivale, Countersign, Footfall, Fresco, Sir Roy, Papercliaso; Sagittarius, Amorist, Gold Mint and Nincompoop.

Booster’s outings have in tho past been restricted to short distances,, Ins longest successful effort having been over seven furlongs in the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton. Ho is apparently to be tried over a distance at Dunedin as his engagements inciudo the Otago Handicap, which is run over a mile and a quarter.

Cartoon, wlio broko down badly at Trcntham last July, has returned south and this would indicate that he lias mado a good recovery as it is intended to ruco him over hurdles at southern holiday meetings. Another uncertain warrior_ in Roseday figures among the nominations for Dunedin, so it is apparently expected that ho will stand up to further racing.

Roy Reed received an injury to an evo while riding Prodice on Saturday and lie had to forego his subsequent riding engagements, which included Town Bird, Golden Wodding and Ilipo. Of these, Golden Wedding ran second, while Prodico won on Monday with R. J. Mackie up on top.

One of the most decisive wins at Takapuna on Saturday was that of Orchus in the second division of the Maiden, writes “Early Bird.” The Quin Abbey horse led from the last three furlongs and then left tho field standing. It was an impressive effort, and suggests that Archus will win many races in much better company.

Llandudno and Valkon, tho favourites in tho Alison Cup on Saturday, were bothered by the distance, for they petered out over the last furlong, comments an exchange. The former, as stated on the evo of tho meeting, had been reported as not having done too well' since his arrival, so that his failure may he overlooked to a great extent. Valkon battled it out up to tho bottom of tho straight, and then he too compounded, finally finishing just outside of a place. He lost no friends by his showing, nor did Llandudno, and their next outing may see both horses in a more favourable light.

Liko the best vintage, Phaola is improving with ago. Of that there can be little room for doubt, for her Alison Cup effort on Saturday was easily her best to date comments the Auckland Sun. Wiggins had the daughter of Catmint handily placed alt the way in tho middle of the field, but when she was fifth in tho leading division n furlong and a half from homo there was a chance that she would not got up. Ilowover, there was no doubt about' it, for as soon as the field had straightened up, Phaola had the leaders beaten, and she came on to score in brilliant fashion. Phaola should now go on

to even better things, for she has displayed splendid stamina.

It was a good finishing effort up the short Takapuna straight that enabled Fapatu to beat all but Pliaola in the Alison Cup, for he was not too well place a liitle over a furlong from the finish, writes a northern scribe. However, ho put in a fine run and battled it out with Phaola and Eden Hall, separating tho pair. Thus both the dividend payors were outsiders. Eden Hall -was ridden an ideal race by Green, who always had ' him behind tho pacemakers. and on tho raiis. When ho made his run in* the straight Eden Hall was subjected to slight interference when running between Valkon and Phaola, although it did not affect the result. This was Eden Hall’s best race for some time, but his luck is still out; or it is that he has gone off ?

Ti Tree put in one of the most remarkable runs ever seen on a racecourse when she got up to dead heat with Macroom in tho Takapuna Plate, states “Early Girl.” Half a mile from home, she was standing the loading division quite "50yds start, and she then flew. Tho filly had to go round the field on the home turn and met with another check, but, as game as they are made, she came again. Ehe was a certainty beaten. If Tree was badly interfered with soon after tho start, and on this showing she is a good deal better than many horses running in open company.

An extraordinary case reported from Sydney furnishes an illustration that the decision to destroy a horse can bo arrived at too quickly. The Snrchedon gelding Rastus was seen to falter at tho end of a training gallop at Broadmeadows, and it was thought that ho had fractured a log. After he liad been shot it was discovered that there was no fracture. Rastus, who was owned by the Newcastle trainer, S. Killick, had won four races in his last five starts.

At a Newmarket meeting in September -B. Carslako weighed out for Alan in tho Great Eoal Stakes, and the horse’s number was exhibited as a starter. Alan's trainer, R. Day, then reported that tlie horse could net be found, and tho number was withdrawn by order of tho stewards. They subsequently fined Day £25 and told him it was his duty to have seen that the horse was in the paddock before tho jockey weighed out. Day’s stables aro at Newmarket, and lie was probably more surprised than anyone else when Alan did not put in an appearance. TAUMARUNUI HANDICAPS. Langstone, ambulance officer, and a Press photographer who happened to be near the scene of the accident gave evidence. The judicial committee passed a unanimous opinion that the happening was entirely of an accidental naturo, no blame being attachable to any rider in tho race.
