BUTTER AND CHEESE
NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS AUSTRALIAN TARIFF INCREASED RECOMMENDATION TABLED. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 29, 8.5 a.m. CANBERRA, Nov. 29. An increased duty of 6d per pound against New Zealand butter and cheese was recommended in the Tariff Board’s report as tabled to-day in the House of Representatives. The importation of butter from the Dominion in the last fiscal year was valued at £500,000. The landed cost was 6 ls 6d per pound, whereas a net return of Is lid was necessary to. Australian producers. The president and vice-president of the Primary Producers’ Union left Sydney for Canberra to-day to confer with Mr Bruce on the question of tariff revision.
The president of the union points out that under the existing reciprocal agreement between Australia and New Zealand any change- in the tariff will not affect New Zealand for six months. He understood that an agreement favourable to the Dominion had already been reached with regard to Australian flour. It was' only reasonable to expect that further • progress in the same direction, might and ought to deal with the present butter position so that the matter should be satisfactorily arranged at an early date. —Press Association. Received November 29, 10.35 a.m. OTTAWA, Nov. 28 ; A large delegation, representing Canadian dairy 'interests, will interview Cabinet to-morrow urging the restoration of the dumping duty, against New Zealand butter.—A. and N.Z. cable.
