DIVIDED OPINION.

CAMPING GROUND AT TIRITEA. BOROUGH TO HELP AUTOMOBILE CLUB. A recommendation by the works committee—that the Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Automobile Club be subsidised £1 for £1 up to £25 for the making of a camping ground at Tiritea —provoked comment at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. Cr. Hodges stated that when a footpath required repairing or something essential had to be done, or where potholes had to be repaired, the requests were referred to next year’s estimates, but when the Automobile Association, which did not pay rates, made application for assistance the finance committee of the council made a favourable recommendation. “The first consideration is our own streets; .1 strongly object, to it,” added Cr. Hodgens. Cr. Milverton: I also object on the same lines. Our streets are more important than the camping ground. Cr. Fitzherbert: It is an absolutely essential work. Cr. Mansford: I have a grievance against the Wellington Automobile Association on account of their signs in the Square. I take the stand that wo do not give them the money unless they take the signs down. The Mayor: This is an application through the Palmerston North branch of the Association.

In reply to a question by Mr Graham, the borough engineer stated that the Association kept putting off the matter of removing the present road signs. _ . The recommendation was carried by five votes to three. It was also decided that the association be given to Januarv 31 in which to take the direction signs down. If this order is not taken notice of, the council itself will remove the posts. Cr. Milverton.: What is wrong with the signsl- 1 The Mayor: They are rough, a disfigurement, bush-like..
