CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Nov. 26. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commcrco was presided over by Mr J. Iv. Hornblow. Mr T. K. Sidcy, M.P., wrote thanking the chamber for its congratulations on the passing of the Summer Time Act. The writer concluded: “It is tho support of organisations such as yours that will go a long way to assist in securing permancy of tho measuro. —Ilecoived. The Palmerston North Chamber acknowledged receipt of tho local chamber’e letter regarding the light lino to the boach and stating that tire matter would bo discussed at that body’s next meeting. —Eocoived. Mr J. Linklator. M.P., wrote stating that ho would have pleasure in co-operat-ing with tho Foxton Chamber in endeavour to obtain a light line to the j.ich and adding that he would also make strong recommendations in the direction of having tho road from Foxton to the boach declared a secondary highway in order that residents of foxton and district might derive tho beuctit that was due to them from the petrol tax. Mr Linklater added that the request was a reasonable one and he felt sure the chamber would realise tho benelit that would follow the construction of a first-class road to tho seaside. —Mr Linklater is to be thanked for the interest ho is taking in the matter. lion. W. Nosworthy, PostmasterGeneral, in roply to Mr Linklater's request for an up-to-date directory for the L'oxlon Post Oliice, wrote stating that the department would not bo justilied in going to the expense of supplying offices of tho size of Foxton with up-to-date copies of directories. —Eocoived. The Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce wrote asking for co-oporation in bringing pressure to boar on the Minister of Public Works to have the basis of allocation of the petrol tax altered from population to mileage, as affecting boroughs with a population of Jes 6 than 6000. The president said that borough’s through which the main highways traversed should receive the samo consideration as counties. The request was endorsed. Reference was made to the rural delivery and telephono service and Messrs Christie, Pcrreau and Rankin were appointed to wait on tho local postmaster and discuss the matter with him. Mr A. Alsop referred to tho unsatisfactory condition of the road access to the beach, lie 6aid that access to the river foreshore was blocked by drifting sand and it was practically impossible for motor vehicles to traverse the track leading to tho sanatorium, which, if formed and metalled, would provide permanent' and safe access. Tho Beach Improvement Committee had dono a good deal of work from funds voluntarily raised. Among other things they had constructed a right-of-way for pedestrians, to obtain which property-owners had conceded portion of their land, and this was now used by motorists. The Harbour Board had promised to do things for four years but very uttio had been dono to improve tho road access. The Beach Committee had planted 10,500 trees by voluntary labour, had provided a hall and public tennis courts and they expected more consideration from tho Harbour Board and County Council than they had received. Mr Berreau said that he was of opinion that the Harbour Board could not expend it s revenue from rents on other than harbour works. The president said that the board had subsidised road work and paid rates to the Manawatu County Council. Mr Barron said ho would move that the member for the district be asked to ■apply for a grant of £IOOO for roading purposes. The motion was carried, it also being decided to request the Harbour Board to put the sanatorium road in order. SWIMMING RACES. Despite tho cold weather experienced on Thursday evening the public turned out in good force to witness the series of races held by tho Foxton Swimming Club for points prizes. They resulted as follow: Schoolboys’ 25yds: Stevenson (sscc.) 1, T. Pcrreau (ssec.) 2, Moore (2sco.) 3. Time, 14 3-ssec. Senior men 50yds: Harrison (scr.) 1, G. Perreau (4sec.) 2, Tawhiti (3sec.) 3. Time, 33isec. Junior 25yds: Mooro (2scc.) 1, Hirini (scr.) 2, T. Porreau (3sec.) 3. Relay Race : A. ’Walls, G. Berreau, aind Marshall (9sec.) defeated W. Harrison, Tawhiti and G. Hirini (scr.). Time, 63isec. Distanco 100yds. Neat dive: G. Perreau 1, J. Hirini 2. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

At a committee meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society the president (Mr D. Christie) was in the chair. Mr F. Robinson, Lady’6 Milo, wroto accepting the position as patron to the society and enclosed a donation of £1 Is, \yhich was received with thanks. The balance-sheet in connection with tho summer show disclosed a small credit balance. Accounts amounting to £35 8s were passed for payment. A donation of £2 2s was received from Mr B. G. Gower, tho donor being accorded a vote of thanks. Tho following were appointed a committee to prepare a schedule for an autumn show to be held on March 19: Miss J. Ross, Mesdames Proctor, S. Easton, the president and secretary and Mr X. Hughes.

Mr and Mrs J. Iv. Hornblow left for Christchurch on Friday, where Mr Hornblow will attend the annual communication of tho Masonic Grand Lodge. Mr J. Death returned to his home in Foxton on Thursday from tho Palmerston North Hospital.
