INDIAN COMMISSION
UNANIMITY OF PARLIAMENT. COMMENT BY NEWSPAPERS. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 28, at 1.5 p.m. RUGBY, Nov. 27. Commenting on the acceptance of the Indian Statutory Commission by all parties of the House of Commons, the Times states: “The unanimity of principal spokesman and the general tenor of their speeches showed an encouraging breath of vision and strong sense of political responsibility. Nothing could have been more satisfactory than so much proof that all parties in Parliament have agreed to treat the imposition of the statutory commission as an issue transcending party differences, and at tho same time to make it clear that the restriction of its membership to members of the British Parliament was never intended as a slight to tho Indian Legislature or as an affront to Indian susceptibilities.” Other newspapers comment in similar vein. As both Houses of Parliament have now signified approval of tho proposed membership of the statutory commission, the formal appointment of this body v’ill follow in due course and agreements will be completed for the first of the commission’s two visits to India.
“It is understood,” says the Daily Telegraph, “that Sir John Simon and his colleagues will leave for the East on or about January 19, which means that they will arrive in India early in February. According to the present programme they will leave for home about the end of March and will return to India in October of next year. During the first visit the Commission will, it is expected, devote, a considerable portion of time to investigating the actual working of the legislative machinery and the methods of administration, and it is not unlikely ■ that this will entail visiting one or two of the provinces.—British Official Wireless.
