AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

KIA TOA CLUB. SUCCESSFUL FIRST MEETING. The newly-formed Kia Toa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s season was opened on Saturday afternoon with a meeting at Terrace End Park. The fixture was quite successful and is the precursor of many another with the excellent object of keeping the club members (the majority of whom are footbailors) together and fit during the warmer months. There was a fairly large attendance of athletes considering that the club is as yet in its infancy, and, once started, the programme was completed expeditiously. Cycling and discus events were abandoned, the former mainly because of the unsuitability of the park for such events, though several cyclists with their machines in racing trim were on the ground. Running, long jump and liop-step-and-jump events, all open, constituted the programme. There was keen competition between the entrants in each contest, the handicapping being very sound. The officials were: Messrs M. Strange (starter and handicapper), A. S. Faire, B. Brown and G. Cooksley (judges). The results were:— 75 yards.—J. Turnbull (6 yards) 1, N. Holden (7 yds) 2, M. Comber (scr) 3. Also started: W. Kelly, T. Holden, P. Hancock (each 6 yards) and W. Bambcry (7yds). Won by two feet with one foot between the second and third men and the remaining runners within a yard of Comber. The field ran almost abreast from start to finish. 100 yards race.—Turnbull (6 yds) 1, Bambery (11 yds) 2, Hancock (9 yds) 3. Also started: Comber \scr), N. Holden and Kelly (8 yds), T. Holden (9 yds). Won by a yard, one foot separating Bambery and Hancock and Kelly being at the tbjrd man’s heels. Turnbull was enhancing his lead near-

ing tho tape, while the scratch man was moving towards the middle of the pack. Four yards divided the first and the last man home.

440 yards race.—T. Holden (35 yds) 1, Kelly (30) 2, Turnbull (12) 3. Also started: Comber (scr), N. Holden (30), Bainbery (40), Hancock (44). Won by five yards, with two yards between the second and third men and the others bunched close behind, excepting Comber, who dropped out from the fourth position about 50 yards from the finish. T. Holden and Kelly, the latter especially, finished with a fino burst of speed. The back-markers ran well to catch the bunch but were unable to maintain the pace. Long jump, three performances optional.—N, Holden (2ft) 16ft lOin, 17ft lin, 17ft Gin, 1; Comber (scr) 18ft 3in, 18rt 9in, 19ft 4in, 2; Bambery (3ft) 14ft llin, 15ft 16ft 3in, 3. Also competed: Turnbull and T. Holden (Ift 6in), Kelly (2ft), Hancock (3ft). Hop, step and jump, three performances optional.—Turnbull (3ft) 35ft lOin 37ft 3in, 1; Comber (scr) 39ft 4in, 39ft 7in, 39ft 9in, 2; N. Holden (3ft) 36ft 7in, 37ft 2m, 36ft 3in, 3. Also competed: T. Holden, Kelly (3ft), Bambery (4ft), Hancock (4ft 6in). After the sports, members of the club assembled and decided to moet for training at the Sportsground on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. The election of a club captain was deferred indefinitely.
