CHINESE CHAOS
NEW ENEMY ARISES. CHOLERA TAKES HUGE TOLL. RANKS OF SOUTHERN VICTORS. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 3, 11.10 a.m. SHANGHAI, Sept. 2. Although: Marshal Sun Chuan-fang’s anti-Southern campaign has apparently ended in dismal failure, leaving the Southerners in possession of Nanking, Shanghai and all the territory south of the Yangtso River, a new enemy is appearing in the ranks of the Southern army. _ 1 _ Cholera is spreading rapidly, taking huge toll. Hundreds of bodies are thrown into the river daily, as it is impossible to bury them. There is a scarcity of medical .aid, but all possible precautions are being taken here against the introduction of the disease.
Marshal Sun Chuan-fang’s forces are retreating towards Chuchow, which is between JPulcow and Pengpu. Lack of support from Chang Tso-lin is responsible for his collapse. —A. and N.Z. cable.
