SWIMMING.

CANADIAN MARATHON. Received September 1, 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Aug. 31. At Toronto to-day more than 200 swimmers started in the Canadian national exhibition marathon of 21 miles for purses totalling 50,000 dollars.—A. and N.Z. cable. MANY GIVE UP. EFFECT OF THE COLD. Received September 1, 11.15 a.m. OTTAWA, Aug. 31. The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers in the 21 miles’ swim for prizes to which Mr William Wrigley, jun., and the Canadian National Exhibition each contributed 25,000 dollars.

Only fifty competitors remained in th© water at the end of six hours out of the 250 starters. Many of the favourites retired early. Among the early quitters were Ed. Keating, Harold Waters (New Zealand), Byron Summers, John O’Halloran and George Clayton. Ernest Verkotter led by three-quarters of a mile after 14 miles had been covered. Georges Michel was in sixth place.—A. and N.Z. cable.
