A good audience witnessed the meeting of E. V. Roberts (three times champion) and E. W. Warren, botlr of Auckland, in the New Zealand amateur billiards championship to-night, but both players put up a display much below their form and the winner’s average was a little under ten, this being for 68 visits to the table. Warren got away at the start, Roberts only scoring nine in seven visits. Warren made the first break of 30, but after 35 visits the only breaks of note were 29, 38, 28 and 20 by Roberts, and 30, 23, 26 and 27 by Warren. Fifty visits to the table occupied an hour and a-half when the score stood at 315 to 294 in Roberts’ favour. Warren never got into his stride, frequently missing hazards and run through shots, and in the few breaks he did make was never at ease. Red losers to the middle pocket were his downfall several times. Roberts twice terminated good breaks by bad attempts at easy winners, but redeemed himself to some extent by a run of over 40 at the top of the table and another of 64, mostly a run on the red. A 60 break was of an all-round nature, and included a dozen nursery cannons. Warren never shaped like winning and was suffering from nerves. The final scores were : —Roberts 666, Warren 446.

The best breaks were as follow: Roberts, 29, 38, 28, 20, 24, 60, 23, 49, 64, 49 (unfinished); Warren, 30, 23, 28, 27, 20, 35.
