INTERPROVINCIAL MATCH.

TARANAKI BEAT MANAWATU,

At tho Showground at Hawera on Saturday Manawatu played a representative Taranaki team, the home side winning by two goals to one. The Ipams took tho iiold us follows: — Manawatu: Outlor, Jones, Askatn, Hearsoy. Booro, Crowe, Baigent, Whitehouse, Stewart, Contain- and Ail'd.

Taranaki: Hurtles, Freakley, Bcare, Thorpe, Gilbort, Stewart, Ramsay, Galloway, Portway, Humphrey and Muggeridgo. Taranaki won tho toss and kicked off with tlio sun behind thorn. Play was immediately carriod to Manawatu’s end anil a corner resulted. Taranaki hud good opportunity to score but Aslcam cleared, transferring play to tho opposite area and evcntnully a corner enablod Froukloy to save his side and Gilbert took tho bull down the field and Ramsuy shot past. From tho kick out tho ball was returned by Humphrey and Portway connected Cutler running out of goal and a good opportunity to scoro was lost, Portway slipping in tho act of kicking and tho ball wont wido. Whitehouso startod a passing run with Stewart, but was stopped by Muggeridge who transferred play to Manawatu’s end. Following through, he had a shot at goal, but being offsiuo tho goal was disallowed. Freakley had a pass from Bccre and kicked over the bar. Pressuro was maintained against Manawatu’s goal and Cutler was kept busy standing up to a barrage of close in shots, Jones eventually clearing. From a corner in Taranaki’s territory Beere passed out to Humphrey who had a tussle for possession with Stewart, but the latter was unsupported. Jones in handling tho ball in Taranaki’s penalty area gave Taranaki a penalty kick and this was taken by Boar© with a well timed shot. Cutler handled tho ball insecurely and it fell into the net. Taranaki 1, Manawatu 0. Manawatu rallied and faster play ensued from the kick off. The visitors, however, were lacking in combination and made a big mistake in not covering their opponents while the Taranaki men were playing a combined game, Muggeridge particularly initiating play that should have meant goals had there been more precision in finishing. The equaliser was brought about by a promising run on the right wing by Hearsey who passed to Stewart who in turn passed to Baigent who beat Hartles with a fast close up shot. Halftime was immediately called with the scores: Taranaki 1, Manawatu 1.

On resuming Stewart changed positions with Whitehouse and played to better advantage at inside right. The Flock House player repeatedly took possession of the ball with clever footwork and his play was the most spectacular of any player on the field. Freakley had two brilliant attempts at scoring, practically repeating the same movements from mid-field and witli solo runs shooting at goal which Cutler saved . On the third attempt, however, he sent in a shot that Cutler

had no hope of saving. Taranaki 2, M Manawatu vainly endeavoured to redeem tho position and considering the soft state of the ground played good football. Taranaki’s defence was sound and with fast moving forwards held Manawatu at bay. Time was later called with no change in tho score. Mr Geo. Mitchell was referee. AUCKLAND BEAT WELLINGTON. Tor Preeß Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. Tho firs* interprovincial soccer match for tho English Football Association trophy was played between Auckland and Wellington at Blandford Park this afternoon, Auckland winning by 3.goals to 1. * nors, Dunsmoro, Spencer and Chaim ers, scored. Anton, scored for the visitors. ; At half-time Auckland led by 2 goals to I, after having the better of the game in all departments Welington improved in the second spell, adapting itself more to the wretched state of tho ground and raising the ball instead of trying to dribble. As a result tho game was far more even, although Auckland was undoubtedly tho superior team. McGirr and Thomas were in splendid form tor tho.losers, and it was no fault of theirs that Wellington lost. ~ , For the first ten minutes Auckland was on the attack: Christie passed to Dunsmoro, to Spencer, whose shot struck tho bar. Chalmers and Dunsmore kept up the pressure, and the latter opened Auckland’s account after twelve minutes’ play. In spite of mud and slush, there was a fair amount of clever football. Auckland had a series of corners, and following some hard, fast play at midfield, Wellington broke 'away, Hamilton centring for Anton to score a pretty goal. Innes was dangerous in tho visitors’ area whenever he got tho ball, and Tarrant had to' save three times. Carter, who was the life of Auckland’s attack at right half, made one of many openings for Innes, which ended in Spencer goaling. Dickinson was hufft in a collision with Carter, and retired just before halftime, when the score was: Auckland 2, Wellington 1. The injured man returned for the second spell, when the visiting forwards put more sting into their attack. Barton made several good line runs, but still Auckland dominated play. Chalmers secured near the line and aimed a fast ground shot at the net. Gibb outwitted Tarrant by deflecting the ball slightly, and Auckland scored its third goal. Thereafter Wellington died away. _ The players were covered in mua when they left the field. JUNIOR DIVISION RESULTS.
