FROM STABLE AND COURSE

(By "Binocular ”)

Commendation, who might ono day bo quartered at Awapuni, proved to bo the greatest stake earner in the Dominion during the past season, the Limond representative winning £6187.

The Palmerston North sportsman, Mr It. A. McKenzie, attended Mr W. H. Gaisford on the winning list, so far as individual horses were concerned, his marc Piuthair winning the good figuro of £4820. Clarinda won £1685 in stako money.

The Sarto gelding Novar, who is s. half brother to Clarinda and Piuthair, won for his popular owner, Mr D. Munro, the sum of £1640 in stake money during the course of the past season, his principal success having been gained in the Manawatu Cup.

Two other Awapuni trained horses who figure in the honours list are the Solferino gelding Buoyant and the Cynic horse Diogenes, they attending oach other closely with £lll7 and £lll2. The former is owned and trained by H. 11. Doylo, hut tho latter, who was trained by G. New for Mr H. P. F. Blundell, of Wellington, is now doing stud duty in the Dannevirke district.

Absurd again heads the winning sires’ list, liis progeny having won £23,309 in stake money, with Solferino next with £17,409. The defunct Bisogno ranks tenth with £9537, while Acre’s progeny, who were proving very free stake winners in tho latter stages of the season, won £7194.

Mr F. J .McManemin, has been appointed handicapper for the Auckland Racing Club, while other appointments are: Mr Charles O’Connor, starter, and Mr It. B. Lusk, judge.

H. Jury, who has in charge of T. George’s horses during tho latter’s absence in Australia, will shortly commence training on his J)wn account again. One of the horses he will have under his caro is Winsome Boy, the five-year-old gelding by Some Boy 11.

During George Jones’s absonce in Australia with Commendation, the other members of Mr W. H. Gaisford’s team will be under tho tuition of S. Hodge, who for a considerable time has filled the position of first lieutenant to Jones.

Lady Bede has foaled a filly foal to Catmint at the Auckland Stud Company’s farm, Otahuhu.

The Spalpeen gelding until recently referred to as Begorra will be known by the name of Haututu in the future.

Pal o’ Mine has commenced work again at Ellerslie, in charge of he* owner, Mr M. Dickey. Tho Some Boy II filly is reported to be looking nice ail’d fresh, following on a spell since the autumn.

Dclightment lias been located at Te Rapa following his successful visit to the Wellington meeting. Ho is reported to be doing well, and his next outing will bo at the Pakuranga meeting at Elcrslie on August 20th.

Speechless and Baby Bun have not been required to do a great amount ot work since being taken up a few weeks back, states a northern writer, although they are both in good order and should be ready to race early in the new season.

Receipt is to be taken up again. She is reported to have wintered well, and entirely thrown off that soreness which troubled her towards the end of last season.

Bright Dawn, who has been allotted top weight in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the coming Pakuranga meeting is now in his filth year and should, be a useful performer again during the present season. The Day Comet gelding raced very consistently as a lour-year-old. winning three races, besides being placed in six other events.

The well-known horseman L. Manson is riding work at Ellerslie again and lie expects to resume race riding at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Judging by the demand on his services on the track, he should receive plenty ol mounts at the coming meeting. It is some time since Manson rode in a race, but he expects to bo able to ride at 7 9 this season and that is a nice handy weight for an experienced rider to scale.

The following riding engagements are announced for the Pakuranga meeting: L. Dulieu: Gala Day, St*! l Comet, Valentino. H. Tinker: Rafferty, Glenlight. C. Moore: Edifice. R. Reilly: Automne and Wyoming. A. Driscoll: Double Mint and Salander. E Stanway: Michael, Syndicate, Hauturn and Te Tahi. G. Holland: Golden Krist and Fair Abbey. A. Rutherford: Whakatoe. Manson: Desert Knight, Cullgio, Llandudno and Bright Dawn.

Since resuming work a few weeks ago at Ellerslie, The Fox is stated to have improved considerably, and lie is now gotting' through plenty of the right class of work to fit him for early racing engagements.

Luthy, who ran off in the Hunters Hurdle Race at Riccarton oil luesday, will need a lot of educating before he becomes a proficient lumper, comments a southern writer, llie Lucullus gelding lost ground at all ot his jumps, and judging by his display it will bo ci long while bcfoio be wins a race over the battens.

The hurdler Slump has had a fairly easy time since he raced at the winter meeting here and he is carrying a good deal of condition at present, writes “Archer ” He is working along steadily in preparation for the spring meetings, and, with a slight improvement upon the form he showed last season, he should bo capable of winning among the hack hurdlers this season.

Charitaine is looking very bright and has been working freoly at Ellerslie, states an Auckland scribe. It is doubtful whether ho has ever been better than he is at present, but ho has tailed too often in minor company to be worthy of recommendation. Charitaine

will bo among the runners at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting.

Automne has been sprinting fairly well and ho is carrying a bright appearance at present, states "Archer.’ So far this gelding has not fulfilled his early promiso and does not seem likely to reach the standard once expected of him, although lie may win some time when the class is not good. Automho is to contest the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, 'where he will bo ridden by R. Reilly.

Since the distance of tho C. J.C. Winter Cup was reduced to a mile—which dates from August, 1898 —horses carrying over lOst have scored victories on seven occasions, as follow: Ostiak (10.5), Vladamir (10.2), Kremlin (10.12). Nyland (10.1), Gazique (10.11), Clean Sweep (10.6), and Sunny Loch (10.9). In last Tuesdays race Merry Damon and Magna Charta headed the list, each with 10.0, but failed.

Constellation and Autumn Day, who according to a recent cable have arrived in Sydney, are both aged geldings and were bred by Mrs J. Lennard, of “Falcon Lodge,” To Aroha. Constellation, who is by Day Comet from Tangawai, won two races as a four-year-old, but has no recent winning performances to his credit. Autumn Day is a brother to Master O’Rorke, and in seven races which ho contested last season he failed to earn a winning bricket. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. TUKI WINS LINCOLN STEEPLECHASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. The total for the three ways was £156,619, as compared with £169,810 10s last year, a total decrease of £13,191 10s. Aberfeldy took charge on reaching tho straight and won by three lengths from Perle de Leon who beat Dubious by half a length. Sunny Loch, Guncase and Peneus were tho leaders in the Styx Hurdles. At six furlongs Peneus jumped to the front, Sunny Loch dropping back beaten. San Pedro then moved up and at the five furlongs hurdle he was with Guncase just behind Peneus. Gay Jim put in a strong run. He followed Peneus round the turn but never looked like racing hint, Peneus winning easily by six lengths. G uncaso came with a strong late run, but Gay Jim beat him by a length. In the Lincoln Steeples Kipling fell at Cutts’s. At the sod wall Kaipuna and Charlatan were six lengths in', front of Peter Maxwell. At the top of the straight Charlatan lost his rider. Kapuna was six lengths in front of Peter Maxwell and Passin’ Through at Cutts’s, where Peter Maxwell made a bad jump. At tho sod wall Kapuna was well clear of Passin’ Through, while six lengths away Peter Maxwell, Vice Grand and Tula were together. Vico'' Grand then drew out from the other pair, following Kapuna and Passin’ Through over the kennels doubles. Vice Grand dropped back at the sod wall, where Zircon fell. Passin’ Through then moved up and ho was with Kapuna at the second to fence, where Kapuna fell. Passin’ Through was then left with a long lead from Tula and Vice Grand, but Passin’ Through hit the last fence and lost liis rider. Tuki then drew away from Vice Grand and won easily by ten lengths, Peter Maxwell being three lengths away. Royal Game was the smartest out in the Heathcote Handicap, and at the entrance to the straight was just clear of Royal Mint. Indian Sage then made his effort, but Royal Game won easily and Indian Sage boat Royal Mint for second place by half a head. LINCOLN STEEPLECHASE, of 500
