SOME SUBSTANTIAL FINES. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Aug. 15. As the result of a police raid on Saturday afternoon, five men appeared in court this morning. William Taylor and Thomas Cota Pat-tei-son were charged with frequenting the street for the purposes of betting and were fined £25 and £SO respectively, with costs 10s. James Samuel Golding, James Basil Corless and Frank Hammersley Bax were charged with using premises as a common gaming house. Each was fined £IOO, with costs 10s. All pleaded S Tn J the case of Bax the police stated that he had two telephones and a wireless apparatus for use in racing transactions. REMANDS AT WHANGAREI. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, Aug. 15. As the result of a police raid on Saturday afternoon, Ernest Alfred Lacey appeared before a J.P. ' tm s morning, charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and with keeping a common gaming house. A lady clerk was also charged with carrying on tho business. A remand was granted until August 29, bail being allowed the former in £l5O and the latter in £IOO.
