CANTEEN FUNDS.
SUGGESTED DISTRIBUTION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 16. The secretary of the Canteen Trust Fund, replying to a question by Air Jordan, ALP., as to whether any consideration is being given to the distribution of the Canteen Fund according to service, on similar lines to the war gratuity, says that if such a distribution were decided upon it would only average 30s for each of the 112,000 men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force while tho cost of distribution would be very considerable. Thousands who would receive it. would not need it and to those really in need the amount would be negligible. The experience of previous wars showed that there was a real need of such a fund for many years after tho end of the war. Portion of the interest earned was now being used for the education of children of deceased and disabled soldiers. The board was considering the question of using the remainder of tho interest to relieve unemployment amongst ex-soldiers under the administration of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
