WINTER SHOW

BIG ATTENDANCE TO-DAY. INTER-COLLEGIATE RUGBY. YESTERDAY’S TAKINGS SHOW ADVANCE. Fine, although dull weather prevailed for the continuation of the Winter Show to-day, and a very large attendance resulted this afternoon, the principal source of attraction being the Rugby match between the first fifteens of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Te Aute College. In the halls there was very considerable activity, the various buildings being thronged, from about noon onward. Machinery hummed everywhere, and there was an incessant clatter and bustle. The produce hall proved a source of considerable attraction, the fine exhibits of dairy produce, vegetables, photography, home industries, fruit and needlework being very much admired.

Yesterday’s attendance was , well ahead of the figures for the opening day of last year. At the gates the sum of £73 3s was taken, tas compared with £45 10s 6d for the corresponding day a year ago. Prior to the Rugby match this afternoon the Manawatu B Association, football representatives met Flock House, and a good game eventuated, being watched by a considerable number of spectators. The lighting of the town for show week has attracted much comment from visitors to Palmerston North. Last year Cuba Street, from the showgrounds to Ilangitikei Street, was illuminated with festoons of coloured lights, and this year there has been an extension to the Square and Rangitikei Street itself, the effect at night being really splendid. The Band Rotunda, in the Square, with its blaze of brilliant and multi-coloured lights, presented a bright spectacle last evening.

Showmen were to-day conducting their operations at full swing, and the amusement area presented an animated but orderly appearance, hundreds of people seeking a typo of entertainment that but twice a year comes their way.
