STEAMER TASMAN

STRANDED IN TORRES STRAIT. NO IMMEDIATE DANGER. SEAS REMAINING CALM. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 3, 9.55. a.m. BRISBANE, May 2. The passengers are remaining aboard the steamer Tasman, which went ashore on a submerged extension of Clarke Island in Torres Strait. Fine weather and calm seas are being experienced. As the Tasman is in no immediate danger, and she is unable to render assistance owing to insufficient depth of water, the steamor Houtman has resumed her voyage. The Tasman has 3000 tons of cargo, consisting mostly of kapok, tea, and fibre. A portion of this to lighten her may have to be transhipped to the steamer Vanderwyck which has left Batavia for the scene of the stranding. The passengers will also be transhipped if necessary.—Press Association.
