(By “Binocular.”) The autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club will be long remembered by local enthusiasts by reason of the big fields, keen finishes and big dividends. Backers of favourites fared but indifferently on the opening day, hut Gtill worse was to follow on the second.

On the Thursday, of a total sum of £20,2-53 handled by the totalisator, 3425 tickets were invested on candidate-; who returned major dividends, while 2258 were purchased on minor dividend payers. On the Saturday the pool was even greater, the day’s investments attaining the £25,000 mark, yet the holders of but 2690 tickets participated in first dividends and 2109 in second dividends. When Black Mint won the Prince of Wales Handicap on Thursday the Catmint gelding had but 88 tickets invested upon his prospects in a pool of £3OOI, while San Pedro, who accounted for the -opposition in the hurdles the same day, was entrusted with 121 tickets in a pool of £2446. Bad as such upsets were for the betting public, worse was to follow on Saturday, Gnrdant having but 97 of the aggregate total of 3892 tickets entrusted on him when he won the final event and Bevis 103 in a pool of 3111 tickets when he won the Stonyhurst Handicap. While the public experienced but indifferent fortune in their betting activities, they were at least rewarded by witnessing highly interesting racing for with but two exceptions the finishes were restricted to head and neck advantages; indeed, in two or three instances there were from three to six horses with but heads separating them at the winning post.

The opening event on Saturday saw Brigadier Bill again the medium of strong support with Elvaette second in demand, the former, however, being a pronounced favourite. Elvaette has a happy knack of coming in on the second day to take the honours and the local meeting saw a repetition of what happened at the Feilding fixture ill that the Foxton trained representative won just as comfortably as she had done at Feilding. The success of the Ghoorka mare gave A. M. Wright, the seaside trainer, the jumping honours for San Pedro had won for him the first day. Comedy Prince ran a surprisingly

| good race on Saturday in the KaiI ranga Hurdles for it had been generI ally understood that the Comedy King | gelding preferred the top of the I ground, and with the track somewhat j slow he was not taken into serious account. However, half a mile from , home he commenced to make a for- [ ward move and a furlong later was up with the leaders, but Elvaette had too strong a finishing run for him. With but 58 tickets invested upon his chances, Comedy King returned his backers a very acceptable price. The performance of Comedy Prince had the effect of forcing Brigadier Bill back a place at the finish, the All Ited gelding failing to return hi/ backers at least a portion of their investment money as he had done the first day. The consistent Kalakaua was one placing further removed with Sottano, Vexatious and Bonny Rill next in attendance. The latter trio promise better things in the near future. Rising Star, who was’ narrowly beaten at Foilding for second honours I with 9.3 on his back over seven furi longs, came in on Saturday at 8.8 ; over a furlong shorter. Nicely placed | at the turn, the Bisogne gelding was l not seriously troubled to win by half j a length and it is evident that the i best has not been seen of this animal j yet. Partaga, who had run second ! over seven furlongs the first day, had ! to accept a similar position again the second day to Rising Star. His tun j should, however, come for he ha ■ been placed in his last four starts, j Something in the nature of a gym jnastic feat was forthcoming in th i Lockwood Handicap when the appren ; t.ice A. Stead attempted to preven ; Berinthia from running wide at th i straight entrance. The rider hunj 1 poised on one leg, his body well ove j towards the rails, but oven with thi : leverage the northern candidate raj | well out and thus lost the advantag she had enjoyed at the turn. The per formance of Berinthia indicated tha on tile customary right handed goinf she should make a big bid to maki amends in tljie near future. Manly enjoyed a double acceptanqi tho first day, but after running thir< ; in the Woodhey Handicap declined hii | second engagement. On Saturday, tin \Archiestown gelding ran unplacec jover six furlongs in the Lockwooi ! Handicap, but then came out to rur ' second in the last event for the meet ing. A £1 investment at each stan would, however, have entailed « slight monetary loss. Hathor, who had won with 9.2 ovei seven furlongs on tho opening day was elected favourite for the Lockwoo 1 ’ Handicap, tho fact that tho Egypl mare had but an additional lib on hei back over a furlong shorter distance apparently making an appeal. However, seventh placing was the besl she could do. Popoff and Kaios were also expected in some quarters, but they filled sixth and fourth positions respectively. Both should be capable of improvement in their forthcoming engagements. Saturday was undoubtedly a tri- ! urnph for the local sportsman, Mr R. A. McKenzie, and his trainer, T. Lloyd, for both tho Tamatete Handicap and the Borough Handicap—the two “legs” of tho double —fell to that owner’s candidates. The going had not promised to suit Clarinda, but she just managed to annex the honours from the fast finishing Yoma, who was somewhat unlucky both days. However the big surprise was the performance of the veteran Mireusonta in tho sprint event, tho chestnut hauging on remarkalny well over tho final pinch. Mireusonta had repeatedly failed this season until it had become accepted that he was “slipping” fast. Those failures had, however, resulted in bis gradually descending in the poundages and from his 9.0 of some few months ago he had the luxurious weight of 7.8 on Saturday and the old fellow showed his appreciation. It was a triumph also for J. S. Potter who recently emerged from liis apprenticeship in F. Tilley’s' Fordell stable. "Whereas Clarinda ranked sixth in the betting order in a field of 12, Mireusonta ranked ninth in a field of the same strength, both paying respectable prices as a result. Merry Damon filled the role of favourite for the Tamatete Handicap, but the Awapuni representative quite failed to repeat his Feilding effort. While Saturday’s event was over a mile and a quarter as compared with a mile and a distance at Feilding, the manner in which the Polydamou gelding finished on the earlier occasion had indicated that the longer journey would not trouble him. However, he faded out three furlongs from homo and such form cannot be accepted as correct. A change of pilots may have played its part. A surprising improvement in form was forthcoming from Bevis in the Stonyhurst Handicap, for at Feilding the Elysian gelding had been stopping at the end of six furlongs, yet over a seven furlong distance on Saturday he finished strongly enough to touch off Peneiis in tho last stride. The latter had been one of the leaders right to tho straight entrance in llie Prince of Wales Handicap, yet was allowed to go out 12tli in the betting order over seven furlongs on Saturday and consequently paid a remunerative price. Bevis actually ranked two places further removed in the betting order. Two incomers in Polyphemus and Lady Bentinck were most in demand for the Stonyhurst Handicap, but neither flattered their backers, the third favourite, Vivo, putting up the best performance of the fancied division by finishing in third berth. Some of the runners did not enjoy tho best of passages while Ngawati was not too well served in his rider. The Autumn gelding, better handled, should have done better than sixth and an improvement on that performance should not bo long delayed. Whereas Mr A. B. Williams, the Hawke’s. Bay owner, had had the pleasure of winning classic honours, in the Awapuni Gold Cup as far back as 1915, when Chortle annexed the honours, and repeated that performance with Rapine last year, it was not till Saturday that he captured the Manawatu .Stakes. While Joy Kiug may have been able to force the pace for Rapine had he fulfilled Iris engagement in the Awapuni Gold'Cup on Thursday, I the reserving of dhe Comedy King gelding had its reward on the concluding day. when ho accounted for Gascony in the Stakes. Gascony made a bold bid for the honours in both the Sires’ Produce and the Marfawatu Stakes, but the King John gelding had to succumb to older competitors in both instances. In him, however, Mr T. H. Lowry has ono who should make a name for himself next season. Great Charter, who is a bigger type of two-year-old, ran in the same ownership in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, but was a competitor in the Cloverlea Nursery on the second day. In the lead throughout, the King John gelding simply bounded away from his fellow competitors in the straight to run in a comfortable winner. Sarcheo, who runs in the nomination of Mr W. R. Kemball, followed. Great

Charter home in the Cloverlea Nursery after according the winner an advantage of 121bs in the weights. The Sarchedon gelding had but half a length to his credit over the Limond filly, Lady Limond, at the post and ae the latter was badly placed at the straight entrance, _ the effort of the Foxton representative was one of very fair order. Crown Area, the winner of the open 6print the first day., made a bold bid to repeat the performance the second day, a great finish finding him a head behind First Acre who was in turn a liea dbehind Mireusonta as they crossed under the wire. Then came Decoy Bird, Beusora, Standard and Arclieen in line, and viewed from the fact that the two last named suffered at the jump out they can bo considered most unlucky not to have figured in tlio placings. The coupling of Orazone and Barryanda in the Adderstone Tandicap proved an attraction to the public and the pair were elected to the post of honour in tho beting market, but the final event was to produce still another surprise—Gardant, who had been third elect over the 6amo distance on the opening day, was allowed to go out 12tli favourite on Saturday and he returned tho price of the meeting. At the distance another representative from the same stable in Inoe promised to he in the picture, but the mare faded out of tke picture in tho run home. Lin .Arlington ran prominently for tho greater portion of the journey, but it is evident that a mile and a distance is just beyond him in the meantime.
