CHINESE AIMS

4 P.M. EDITION-

JAPAN SYMPATHETIC. PROPER MEANS NECESSARY.

Received April 23, 1.20 p.m. TOKIO, April 22. M. Tanaka, as Premier and Foreign Minister, in a written statement says that the chief aim is to clean up the difficulties prevailing in economic circles, and renovate administrative methods. The foreign policy is. chiefly concerned with China. Japan sympathises with the Chinese people and is determined to help them to attain their aims, but these aspirations should be attained by appropriate means. M. Tanaka believes the Chinese do not wish to endanger the present relations between China and the Powers, while the Powers do not appear averse to acceding the legitimate demands of the people. ... Regarding Communist activity in China, Japan can hardly remain indifferent as she is vitally concerned with the preservation of peace in the Orient which is most deeply affected by the results of such activity. Japan is ready to co-operate with the Powers after considering the particular problems involved at an appropriate time in appropriate measures. He is confident that this stand will be well understood by her neighbour Russia.—A. and N.Z. cable. *,
