ROYAL TOUR.
VISIT TO AUSTRALIA
LONDON, March 25. Tho Daily News’s special Australian number, issued as a souvenir of the arrival of the Duke and Duchess at Sydney, is filled with Australian ar--1 icles, photographs and advertisements. A message from Mr Bruce says: “Australia awaits with keen anticipa--1 ion their Royal Highnesses’ visit, which has a deep national significance, binding more closely Britain and Australia. It affords the opportunity for demonstrating our loyalty to the King and devotion to the Empire, the unity of which is essential to our safety and the future of civilisation.”
Sir Joseph Cook’s article Bays: “The quarter of a century which has elapsed since Their Maiesties’ visit has seen the Commonwealth clothe itself in the habiliments of nationhood, attaining an amazing efficiency and prosperity which Australians do not forget, have been achieved through Britain’s beneficence and guidance.” The Agents-General, in their messages, emphasise the States’ interest in the tour.
Mr Tom Clarke, the managing editor, who recently returned to England after years of journalistic work in Melbourne, contributes an article, in which he says: “Australia is a land of equal chance. The workers’ open and cheerful faces are evidences of the happiness within everyone’s grasp and their emancipation from mere wage slavery. I do not blame Australian labour”for trying to preserve its good wicket, but I would like to see £1,000,000 a year spent on carrying out an exchange of British and Australian workers on sightseeing tours. If Britishers and Australians had a better understanding it might hasten the day when there would be fewer slums in Britain and fewer open spaces in Australia.”
