RAID AT CHRISTCHURCH.
ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 16. Detectives raided premises in Cathedral Square, alleged to be used as a .common gaming house, this afternoon. Armed with a search warrant, Detec-tive-Sergeant Young and Detective Mayne went to room 11, Royal Exchange Buildings, Cathedral Squqre, occupied by John Henry Bott, aged 54, and seized a largo quantity pf materials which the detectives allege were used for bookmaking. Two men who were in the room at the time of the raid were taken into custody. The room presented the appearance of a printing office, there being two addressograph machines, typewriters, a tape machine, cheque books, ledgers and office appliances of all kinds. While the detectives were in the room several telephone calls were received, which were answered by the police. The prints of names on the addressograph machines number many hundreds. As a result of the raid, John Henry Bott and William Henry Cousins, aged 27, appeared before Mr S. Hurst Seager, J.P., Bott being charged with occupying a common gaming house, and Cousins with assisting him. Both' men were remanded to appear in the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow. Bail was fixed in self £IOO eacli and one surety of £IOO each.
