WASHINGTON, March 1. ''Mr Porter, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has received a letter .from the Chinese Minister, Sze, transmitting a message from Eugene Chen, the Chinese Nationalist Foreign Minister. The message expressed the “hope that the American Government will not repeat the British Government’s mistakes in the procedure in China.” The letter is interpreted in some quarters as a suggestion to America not id land troops as Britain has done in China] The message caused some comment since it apparently did not g° through the State Department, which is the usual source of communication between foreign diplomats and - American officials and Congressmen.—A. and N.Z. cable. UNITED STATES WARSHIPS. MORE SENT TO SHANGHAI. WASHINGTON, March. 1, Five additional destroyers are being rushed to Shanghai from points in China and Manila, and will be added to the seven warships already stationed there. It is understood that the report of the Consul-General, Mr Lockhart, at Hankow, that shipping conditions on the Yangtse River are intolerable, is responsible for the dispatch of additional vessels.—A. and N.Z. cable. Koo, the well-known lecturer, cannot now visit the Dominion owing to the developments in China. TROOPS REACH HONGKONG. SECOND BATTALION OF GUARDS. TrUGBY, March 1. The Second Battalion of the Goldstream Guards arrived at Hong Kong to-day by the Kinfaunscastle. It is understood that they will not at present proceed to Shanghai.—British Official Wireless.
