COMMON FAILING.
“RESPECTABLE SELFISHNESS.” BISHOP’S SERMON. BATHURST, Feb. 20. The Bishop of London, Dr. Winnington Ingram, left this morning for the West. In his final address to the parishioners of All Saints’ Cathedral, Dr Ingram said: “Australia has many splendid things to glory in; climate, sunshine, youth, and virility, the hope of children and the strength of its young men, and when Australia glories in the Cross it will become one of the greatest nations in the world.” Dr. Ingram added that pride and conceit and vanity were ridiculous in the sight of the Cross. Respectable selfishness was the commonest thing in the world. So long as those who had it had a good time and thought they were better than other people, it would be “No more immigrants, thank you!” That was the line that was common, and it was absolutely unchristian.
