CENTRAL SCHOOL

. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The regular monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held last evening, Rev. H. T. Peat presiding. There were also present Messrs W. B. Willoughby, A. Clark, H. J. Canton, W. R. Mayes and A. H. Fisher (secretary). An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr F. Pycroft. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Mr L. F. de Berry) reported as follows for the month of February: "The average attendance for the month was 706, whilp the average roll now stands at 785.5. Mr R. McKenzie has been appointed a substitute probationary assistant. Mrs Bristow was absent for one half day owing to illness. During the month’ the following officials have visited the school: Inspectors Crawford and Law, Mr Swanger (secretary to the Board of Education) and Mr Hodges (architect). I have pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of a framed war record from Messrs Jackson Bros., three pictures from Mr G. H. Bennett and boxes and wood, etc., from Mr James Wallace and Mr Mills.” CORRESPONDENCE. The Railway Department wrote notifying that a refund would be made to the committee in regard to the annual school picnic held on February 4 if personal application were made to the stationm aster at Palmerston North, —Received. The Girl Guides Association tendered thanks to the committee for granting the use of the school baths on February 19 for its swimming' sports on that day.—Received.

The Wanganui Education Board, in reply to a Tetter relative to the work of altering the windows at the school, stated that the job was a. very difficult one and that its architect was satisfied that the contractors were using their best endeavours to complete the work with as little inconvenience to the school as possible.—Received. A further letter was received from the board expressing thanks for the committee’s donation toward the funds of the children’s health camp.— Received. A request from the Department of Health for a larger table in the dental clinic was received. —It was resolved to procure the table as described by the writer. GENERAL. The headmaster reported that full arrangements had been made for the children of the school to take part in the reception of the Duke and Duchess of York on Friday. Accounts totalling £32 were passed for payment. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr S. J. Watson requesting him to audit the school accounts. Mr Mayes gave notice of motion in regard to a reoommendation that the school baths be electrically lighted in a form suitable for holding night carnivals.
