PALMERSTON’S JUBILEE.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—To a resident of Palmerston’ North for a number of years, the oity looked more beautiful on Saturday night than ever before in its history, thanks to the activities of the Jubilee Committee. The strings of coloured lights lent to the somewhat usually sombre town a fairy-like appearance, which transformed it into a gay and joyful appearance. Visitors to Palmerston North were loud in their praise of the decorations and activity displayed by the local bodies concerned, and it is with pride I pen these lines. Were it not for the financial upkeep it would pay the Borough Council to permanently illuminate the city on existing lines or as near as possible to the present scheme. There is no doubt that the carnival air lent by th© gaily ooloured lights would attract many to Palmerston North in the future, as it is doing during carnival week, particularly on a Saturday night, and this would be to the benefit of the local tradespeople. There was one thing lacking as regards the decorations on Saturday night, however. That was the absence of illumination on the majority of business premises in the Square. For instance what would look more effective than the Post Office and clock outlined with lights? There are many buildings in Palmerston North which could be tastefully decorated in this manner to the ultimate benefit of the local shopkeepers. After 50 years of the wonderful progress we have made, surely we can now keep abreast of the other cities in the matter of illumination, especially on an occasion such as the present.— I am, etc., MOTH. Palmerston North, March 1, 1927.
