VITAL STATISTICS. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, March 2. The vital statistics for the month of February were as follow: —Births 15, deaths 5, marriage notices issued 5. For January the registrations at the Feilding Post Office were as under:— Births 17, deaths 6, marriages 3. LORRY IN DIFFICULTIES. On Monday, whilst engaged in transporting electric power poles to Rangiwahia for line extension purposes, the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board’s big lorry and trailer had a narrow escape from a smash-up. While negotiating; one of the many bends on the road from Kimbolton the trailer, which was bearing part of the heavy weight of a load of poles, left the road and slipped over the bank and hung there still attached to the lorry. Fortunately, the lorry maintained its position on the road and, after the poles had been unloaded, the trailer was hauled back on to the road by the aid of the winch on the lorry. All traffic was held up for about an hour and a-half before the vehicles resumed their journey. No damage to any extent was done to the trailer. ROYAL VISIT.
The finalising of all details in connection with the visit to Feilding of Their Royal Highnesses has been completed and as the result of official notice being received yesterday to the effect that the Royal train will now pull in to the station, instead of stopping on the crossing, the construction of the platform is being proceeded with. The town clerk has been faced with the difficulty of an insufficient flag supply and up to the present has only been able to get 500_ out of the 2000 required. If further inquiries in Auckland and Wellington for flags do not provide the necessary number it is likely that the effort to give each of the school children a flag will have to be abandohed. A movement is on foot for the providing of afternoon tea for the country children, but owing to the shortness of time available for making preparations it is not definitely. known whether the idea can be carried out. It has been suggested that the Women’s National Reserve and the Chamber of Commerce take the organising of the matter up but no finality has so far been reached. PERSONAL. Mr J. H. Scott, who has been transferred to Feilding from the General Post Office, Wellington, took up his duties on Monday.
