Lyttelton Harbour and the coastline generally are reported to be infested with schools of sharks. Two fishermen at Gollan’s Bay, in the harbour, landed a big catch of sharks during the week-end. Included in their catch were over 30 sharks of varying sizes. The largest measured 7 feet 4 inches. It was hooked on an ordinary cod line, and fought desperately for an hour and half before it was secured with four other lines and hauled into shallow water.

When the Aorangi was one day out from Vancouver, Harold Frederick Stoneman (aged 19) surrendered himself, having stowed away. In the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland yesterday the third officer said that Stoneman worked well on the voyage to Auckland and behaved himself equally well, giving entire satisfaction. The police said that Stoneman was born in London and went to Canada in 1921. Being unable to secure employment, he came to New Zealand hoping to find work. The magistrate said that he did not desire to send Stoneman to gaol, neither did he wish to fine him as he had no money. He would be remanded for one week.

At a quarter to 11 o’clock last night a slight earthquake was felt in various parts of Wellington. The tremor, which was also felt in Palmerston North, commenced with a gentle jolt, and was immediately followed by a more pronounced shake. Thieves profited by the summer weather on Monday, when the highest temperature this summer was recorded, 84 degrees, which induced a good number of people to try the surf (states a Christchurch telegram). Numerous thefts from the clothing of bathers were later reported from the dressing sheds, principally at New Brighton.

“The results of the recent examinations in law conducted by the University of New Zealand have left Wanganui law students who sat sadly lamenting,” said one of them to a Chronicle reporter the other day. “There is an impression that entry into the legal profession is not likely to be any easier from now on, and that the doors are practically locked except to those who can attend the university.” .

Large crowds thronged the platforms of the local railway station all day yesterday and to-day. Every train arriving or departing carried more than the usual complement of passengers. The New Plymouth southbound express yesterday, which arrived at Palmerston North over 30 minutes late, consisting of 20 carriages and drawn by two engines, failed to cater for the large number of passengers and a crowded relief train was dispatched shortly afterwards for Wellington. To-day the railway authorities are again exceptionally busy.
