AMAZING STORY.
TERRORIST CUSTOM. “THE TORTURE OF THE TREE.” DEATH OF YOUNG MAN. PARIS, Dec. 31. An amazing story is l told in connection with the discovery of the body of Francis Halama, a young married man, who was found hanging head downwards from a tree in a wood near Beauvais. It w-as at first thought that he had caught his foot in a cleft between the branches while climbing, and had been unable to release himself.
It lias been disclosed, however, by a Russian working in tho same factory that a terrorist custom still prevailed known as “the torture of tho tree,” which was practised against any member of the band who betrayed his comrades. The practice was to wedge a man’s leg in the fork of a tree so that he could not possibly release hims'elf, and then leave him to perish. The police have come to the conclusion, that Halama was a victim to this torture.
Six arrests have been effected. —A and N.Z. cable.
