MOTOR ACCIDENTS.
FIGURES FOR PAST YEAR.
AUCKLAND’S BAD RECORD.
AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. , There were forty deaths as the result Of motor vehicle accidents in 1926, as against 22 for T 925. Although motor registration has increased considerably, last year’s fatality rate lacks explanation. It is believed that when all statistics are available it will be shown that half the motor fatalities in the Dominion have occurred in the Auckland urban area.Motor fatalities in 1925 for the whole of New Zealand totalled 61. Auckland’s total for the year just closed being more than two-thirds of the Dominion aggregate for the previous year. Of last year’s victims 22 were pedestrians, who were knocked down by motor-cars, lorries, or buses, five were motor-cyclists, who collided with vehicles or were thrown, and the remainder were motorists or occupants of vehicles involved in collisions. The total number of pedestrians involved in collisions, both fatal and nonfatal, for the six months from March 1 to August 31, was 146. Including these, motor-cars were involved in 288 collisions in the half-year.
