DEFENCE AREA MEETING

On Saturday afternoon, ’under most indifferent shooting conditions, the Defence authorities held a rifle meeting for terirtorials and cadets over the age of 18 years. The series will be continued on Wednesday week,.’when the mid-week members will he giyen a.n opportunity, of participating, and the scores in several of the matches are, in consequence, not yet available. Following are the results of the series completed: FIREFIGHT. Four teams in the 6th Mounted Rifles, 7th and Bth Batteries and the High School Company competed in-the firefight. The 7th Battery and 6th M.R. were the first pair to shoot, off, the mounted- men proving easy winners. High School, in opposition to the* Bth put up an excellent performance and ran out comfortable winners. In the final, however, High School failed to repeat their earlier performance and tile 6th M.R., again shooting well, emerged with the honours. LIGHT GUNS.

In the light gun section, open to teams of three men and a leader, three teams competed, the 6th M.R. (Hotchkiss) /and the 7th and Bth Batteries (Lewis). The 7th Battery, drew first place, No 1 putting .on. a good group. No 2, however,, was, a little high, but No 3 put on a good score on the traverse target and tho team, was allocated 63 points. The Bth Battery was next down, but. only got eight rounds away before the gun ceased firing. A protest was entered by the leader on the grounds of a broken extractor and, in terms of the conditions governing the competition,' the protest was allowed. The 6th M.R., at tkeir v visit to the mound, put o na mediocre score and the Bth Battery, at their second attempt,', put up a total of 67 points and were thus declared the winners. The ginning team was Lieutenant Buchanan (leader) and Gunners. ,W. Morgan, D.. Shearman and Hutchings.
