LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
YESTERDAY* BUSINESS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 29. In tho Legislative Council to-day tho Justices of the Peace Amendment Bill, tho Nurses and Midwives Registration Amendment Bill and the Fire Brigades Bill were received from the House of Representatives and read the first time. The petitions on the 'Religious Exercises in Schools Bill were referred to a special committee. • ! Discussing the lands for settlement report, Hon. E. Newman pointed to the fact that suitable lands for settlement were~~becoming more and more difficult to find, and ho asked where the land was to come from for future settlement, especially as immigration progressed. He professed concern in regard to tho position, and suggested that the Government should classify, all lands with tho view later on to a closer settlement scheme. Tho Gaming Amendment Bill was considered in committee. Practically every clause was contested by divisions, but the only amendment effected was a slight one deleting certain words restricting tho reasons for permitting tho transfer of totalisator licenses from one course to another to circumstances of improvements or reconstruction.
