About half-past eight on Saturday night, a motor cyclist had a narrow escape from being drowned in the Wanganui river. When proceeding along the right bank of the river road just above the Upokongaro ferry he lost control of his machine, and the wheel of the side-car went over the bank, precipitating the rider and his motor cycle down a 30ft cliff into the water. Fortunately he was ablo to clutch some willow branches, which enabled him to escapd from liis precarious position and communicate with a neighbouring farmer. It was a very close call.
