UNITED STATES HEAT WAVE
MANY DEATHS CAUSED. NEW -YORK, July 23. The hottest July 22 on record was experienced in the most eastern sections of "the continent. The promises of cooling showers passed unfulfilled. Temperatures of 100 degrees are general. The heat is a contributing factor to many deaths, but it is impossible to estimate the number of fatalities for which it is directly responsible. —Reuter. .DEATH LIST INCREASES 1 . NEWYORK, July 23. Although cooler weather was experienced to-day in the eastern States and Canada, an increase in the relative humidity largely offset the drop in temperature. The list of deaths traceable to heat during the past week has increased steadily, and it is believed that the total will be several hundreds.—A. and N.Z. cable.
