FOXTON NOTES

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. [From Our Own Correspondent.] The usual monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was presided® over by Mr J. K. Hornblow. The president accorded to ■■ tho Mayor (Mr M. E. Pearreau) and Mr J. S‘. Moir (of Levin, and Co.) a welcome to the chamber. It was decided to viait on tho Magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) with a view to getting a new Courthouse erected in place of the present one, which is over 60 years old. ' Tho Minister and member for the district are also to be written to in this connection.

It was resolved to hold a social evening on Monday week, to which representatives of the Palmerston North, Levin and Shannon chambers are to be invited. Mr McMurray suggested holding quarterly luncheons at which addresses would bo given. The suggestion was held over in the meantime. ' A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary for motoring the postmaster and linesman over Moutoa and Maratim in connection with telephone business. It wa3 decided to make .arrangements to address a meeting of residents of the above district at an early date in connection with joining up with the Foxton exchange. . Mr Alsop also brought up matters -in connection with beach postal facilities.—It was decided to convene a meeting of beach residents to bo addressed by tho postmaster. It was decided to make endeavours to have a proper High School building erected as soon as possible. ■ ~ The chamber also resolved to hold a series of half-hour lectures. The first will be conducted by tho president at next meeting. , Mr T. Corn was elected a new member.

RETAILERS AT RUGBY. Palmerston North and Foxton retailers met on the racecourse on Wednesday, the game being witnessed by a fair number of spectators. The local team showed marked improvement on its previous games and certainly had the best of the game. In the latter stages of the second spell Foxton kept Palmerston North busy on the defence. Within five minutes of tho opening Shakleton finished off an attack by the visitors by crossing, and tho kick was converted, giving Pulmerston North a lead of five points. The visitors kept up tno attack, but a free kick gave tho home team relief. The local forwards swooped down and Ball made a dashing run aiid forced his way over (jutside the posts. Kankin missed an easy kick. —Palmerston North 5, Foxton 3. A forward rush by the local team ended in Rankin kicking a penalty goal.—Foxton 6, Palmerston 5. Some minutes later Palmerston North North again scored and took the lead. — B—6.8 —6. A hno movement by Bryant, Newth and Williams saw the latter over. Broad railed with the kick.—F'oxton 9, Palmerston North 8. In the opening of the second spell the visitors swept downfield and Harvey got over. Ray tailed with the kick. Palmerston North 11, Foxton 9. From then on Foxton did tho attacking and Hutchins and Hornblow on two occasions were smothered on the line. Palmerston North forced on three occasions, and tho game ended in a win for the visitors by a margin of two points. Mr T. McDonald controlled the game. The visitors were subsequently entertained to refreshments, when a welcome was accorded the team by Mr H, Hutchins, who expressed tho hope that Wednesday football would be continued, and that F’oxton and Palmerston North would meet on many future occasions. Mr K. W. Shackleton replied on behalf of tho Visitors and thanked the Foxton players for their hospitality. It was arrangod that Foxton should journey to Palmerston North next Wednesday to play the return match.
