PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

MEETING OF SOCIETY. The fortnightly meeting of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening when the Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt presided over a good attendance. The chairman reported having applied for a free railway pass for the inspector. It was reported that a bicycle had been procured for the inspector and that his uniform had been procured. The secretary was instructed to arrange for the installation of a telephone at the inspector’s residence. Subscriptions amounting to £7 3s were paid in. The Mayor (Mr F. J. Nathan) wrote accepting office as president of the society. Arrangements were made to meot with the Feilding Society on Friday, July 2nd. Miss Abraham and Mr M. H. Oram were deputed to make transport arrangements for the visit to Feilding. The secretary was requested to ascertain if the service car proprietors would give free passes to the inspector. It was resolved to give publicity to the fact that the inspector will arrange for the humane killing of animals free of charge.

The inspector (Mr W. J. T. Floyd) reported having attended several pig, poultry and cattle sales, and also the recent show, and that he had found everything in order. Visits had been paid to Longburn, Levin and Foxton. Enquiry had been made concerning some lions quartered at the Showground, and also in regard to an exhibition of buckjumpers. There were no complaints in theso cases. An investigation had been made into a case of allegedly leaving a cow without food and cover, and into a case of the alleged cruel disposition of a dog.
