WEMBLEY’S BUYER
SPORTING MILLIONAIRE. LONDON, June 16. Mr James White, chairman of the Beecham Trust, has bought Wembley for £500,000 on behalf of a syndicate, says tho Evening Standard. The famous sporting millionaire, “Jimmy” White, who came from humble Lancashire origin, and made his first rise as a boxing promoter, now owns some of London’s most valuable property. He and his associates recently acquired old estates in the vicinity- of Australia House, including the Covent Garden markets and extensive hotel and theatre property. Mr White now takes a keen interest in Daly’s Theatre, and runs a big racing stable. It has not yet been decided what will become of Wembley, but it is a condition of the purchase, in tho case of many of the buildings, that they shall be removed The big stadium, whore the football cup final is played, will remain. WORLD’S SPORT CENTRE. LONDON, June 17. The Westminster Gazette states that Mr White’s syndicate intends to convert Wembley into the world’s sport centre. Their colossal scheme includes a stadium which will not only be the permanent home of the cup final, but it is also hoped to play, international Rugby there instead of at Twickenham, and also make it the venue for international athletics, Boy Scouts’ international jamborees, and military tattoos. It is hoped that tho ground will provide a ready-made arena when the Olympiad is held in Britain.
