OBITUARY.

MR JOHN TAIT.

The death occurred in a private hospital late last evening of Afr John Tait, of Palmerston North, a resident of this district for the past twenty years. Born in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, in 1858, the deceased gentleman was married in 1886 at Belfast and came to New, Zealand the following year, taking up'lafid at Lower Hutt, where he indulged in farming pursuits for a number of years. Removing to-this district twenty years' ago, he farmed at Kelvin Grove and in the Kairanga, eventually retiring seven years back and coming to live in Palmerston North, where his wife predeceased him seven months ago. Of a happy and cheerful disposition, deceased made many friends, and his passing will bo greatly regretted. Since the death of his wife, ho had not enjoyed the best of health and three weeks ago had to enter a private hospital. In his passing,- much sympathywill be extended to the family—Mesdames J. Andrews (Bainesse), H. Divehall (Ivanhoe Terrace) and L. A. Lancaster (Kopane), Miss N. Tait (Palmerston North) and Mr R. Tait (.Carroll street).. MR WILLIAM THOAIAS GALPIN.

The death occurred at his residence, “Fernleigh,” Marton. yesterday morning of Mr William 'Thomas Galpin, aged 85 years. Tho late Mr Galpin, who was born in Wellington, was highly respected in the Rangitikei district, where he had resided for the greater part of his life. After having a farming experience in the district of a number of years, Mr Galpin took up “Woodlands.” The original holding was comparatively small, but Mr Galpin gradually, added to it until it became one of the finest estates on the AVest Coast, being now divided and farmed by his sons —Henry, Edgar, George and Ernest. Tho homestead, which was completed in 1895, is a large building splendidly situated, the view taking in Ivapiti Island, Egmont and Ruapehu mountains and the Rualiine and Tararua ranges. Mr Galpin was the first to introduce Abcrdeen-Angus cattle to the district, and was a grower of Lincoln sheep in the early days. Mr Galpin joined the Rangitikei Cavalry when first formed, and until the corps was disbanded. In 1873 the deceased gentleman married Miss May Hammond, daughter of the late Mr Matthew Hammond, of “Killeymorn, Bulla, and leaves a widow, five sons — Messrs Henry, Edgar, George and Ernest at “Woodlands” and Claude at Linton —two daughters —Mrs Spedding (Auckland and Miss Freda Galpin (Marton) —and 20 grandchildren. He is survived by a biother, Mr C. M. Galpin, of Hastings, wire was born in 1839 on. the ship Adelaide on the passage from Liverpool to Wellington.
