HOSPITAL DAY

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Matters in connection with the campaign to raise funds for the Palmerston North Hospital, were further advanced fast evening when the Hospital Day committee met, Airs S. V. Trask presiding, over a good attendance. Mr F. J. Oakley reported on recent visits to Levin and Foxton ; stating that support had been promised in both towns. Mrs Trask said that the matron or the hospital had arranged to allow four nurses to collect at Levin in aid of the funds, and it was suggested that a colfection.be made there on June 26. A number of ladies volunteered to make the trip and it was decided that the cars leave Palmerston North at 10 a.m. Mesdames Trevor and Seifert kindly offered to place their cars at the disposal of the ladies and a vote of thanks was accorded them for their generous action. It was decided to provide a humber of badges for sale by tho'collectors and it is honed that the disposal of these will materially increase the funds. Tho spending of whatever funds were raised should be done in Palmerston North was tho opinion of Mrs Trask, who stated that it was only fair to do this. Last year, she understood, some of the funds were spent outside the town and, in view of the support given by the public of Palmerston North, this procedure was not right. Mr F. Pyeroft was of a similar opinion and advised tho meeting to stipulate that the funds should be spent in Palmerston North. In reference to a letter from the Feilding Borough Council, in which it was suggested that, if sufficient funds were raised, a motor ambulance should ho purchased for the use of Feilding and district, Mr Oakley said lie did nob think that the committee should tie its hands in this way. To'grant the request would only mean entertaining similar ones from Foxton and Levin. He reminded the meeting that, in order to obtain the Government subsidy, tho money raised would have to be handed over to the Hospital Board unconditionally. . Under those circumstances they could not very well earmark any portion for an ambulance at Feilding. However, if the Feilding people desired to raise money for an ambulance lie felt sure the committee would assist readily in return for Feilding’s help next week. It was decided to reply to the Feeding Borough Council accordingly. It was decided to make a collection in Feilding on July 2. In regard to the raising of funds locally, tho question of conducting stalls was raised by Air Oakley, who stated that last year about £l2O had been raised by such means. Permission to conduct stalls had been obtained from the Borough Council. It was resolved to hold three stalls in the Square on July 3 provided the weather is fine otherwise only two will be held. The following stall-holders were appointed : Mesdames Palmer, Bosworth, Collinson, Haggitt, Eliott and Swindell, who will be assisted by helpers. Air Oakley reported that 10,000 school badges, 8000 shilling badges and 2000 half-crown badges would lie issued, and those for the country districts would be sent out immediately.
