SEAMAN ADMITS THEFT.
THREW JEWELLERY IN HARBOUR.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 24. ,F. J. Tanner, aged 19, was charged at the Police Court with breaking and entering and the theft of jewellery valued at £IOB from the shop of Victor Speight, of Onelmnga, on which charge Arthur Tilling aged 32, had previously pleaded guilty, and William Charles Westwood, aged 32, not guilty, both being committed to the Supreme Court. Tilling, now called as a witness, stated that he and Tanner were seamen. He (Tilling) admitted that he opened Speights’ door with a jemmy, while Tanner kept watclv outside. Tanner, who pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence, said he became frightened of holding the jewellery, which ho threw into the harbour while the steamer Alanaia, on which he was a fireman, was in Auckland.
