LOAN FOR NEW TOWN HALL. Despite tho fact that much adverse criticism had been levelled at tho Foxton Borough Council for proceeding with tho erection of tho now Towp Hall, to replace tho ono destroyed by fire early this year, boforo obtaining tho sanction of the ratepayers, the poll hold on a proposal to raise £SOOO to erect and equip the building was carriod by an overwhelming majority. The figures were as follow: —For, 224; against, 51; informal, 2. That 277 ratepayers recorded their votes goes to show the interest evinced in the question. The only reason why tho council proceeded with the work before placing a poll before the ratepayers was that had the work beon held up until such time as the sanction could be obtained the building could not liavo beon completed before Christmas and then the Town Hall would miss tho holiday business estimated to be worth £IOO per week. It is anticipated that tho hall will now bo ready for use towards the end of November. After tho declaration of tho poll the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) thanked the ratepayers for their approval of tho council’s action and said it was very gratifying to see such an overwhelming majority. It went to show that tho council had the confidence of the ratepayers. HOCKEY. A novel hockey match is to he played on the racecourse on Saturday next between the local hockey players and a team of male “old players” in female attire. The teams will bo as follow: —Ladies: M. Virtongen, E. Henskie, N. Woods R. Barber, B. Gower, M. Patterson. C.-Walsh, M. Stevenson, N. Spring, B. Peryman and K. Marton. Men: W. E. Bullard, D. Cnristie Barron, A. Stevenson, Roore, Sorby S. Austin, 11. Hornblow, G. Alexander,' M. Cook, 11. Hutchins. Emergencies, Si. E. Perreau and F. Mason,

Mr R. Parker met with a nasty accident on Tuesday. As the rosult of the front forks of his bicycle snapping, he was thrown heavily to the ground and received a severe cut over the loft eye, necessitating medical attention.

A mollyhawk was coughi over the bar by Captain Larson pilot at tho beach, on Tuesday. The bird was brought to town and finally liberated at tho wharf. A peculiar thing about the mollyhawk is that, although it has a large spread of. wings, it cannot rise oft the land. Captain Larsen also captured a seal on the beach last week. It was badly wounded, however, and did not survive vory long.
