FRENCH CRISIS.
CABINET PROBLEM. M. BRIAND’S ABILITY QUESTIONED. PARIS, Juno 22. The lobbies of the Chamber of Deputies are anxiously questioning M. Briand’s ability to form a Cabinet, following an all-day unsuccessful quest for a Finance Minister. Successive candidates lose confidence alter a heart-to-heart talk with’ M. Peret or the manager of the Bank of France on the real facts of the position of the Treasury. M. Cailiaux is the latest man approached, but he repeatedly refuses to accept Finance unless he simultaneously heads the Government. It is confidently predicted that M. Briand will be compelled to approach an expert who is not a member of Parliament. In the meantime lie is canvassing party leaders regarding the possibility of a stable majority, without which the Premier declares that he will not take office. —Reuter.
AGREEMENT REACHED. M. CAILLAUxIviINISTER OF FINANCE. Received June 24, 10.55 a.m. PARIS, June 23. After a conference at the Quai d’Orsay M. Daumer stated that an agreement had been reached iii regard to all portfolios in the new Cabinet. M. Cailiaux accepted the Ministry of Finance. Following M. Cailiaux’s acceptance of the Ministry of Finance, M. Briand explained that M. Poincare’s refusal of the Finance portfolio caused the collapse of the plan for a Brian-Poin-care combination. "When M. Briand informed M. Doumergue of his failure to form a Cabinet M. Doumerguo urged him to persevere, and M. Briand considered it his duty to do everything humanly possible. The Cabinet he would form with M. Caillaux’s collaboration would be one of Republican union with the introduction of certain new elements. —Reuter.
