DARING BURGLARY
SENSATION IN AUCKLAND. PLATE GLASS SMASHED. PAWNBROKER LOSES DIAMONDS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 23. There was a sensational burglary with every appearance of it being the work of an experienced criminal, or criminals, at about five o’clock this morning, at the Monte de Piote loan shop in the Gas Company’s buildings in Pitt street. Taking advantage of' the police change during a heavy fog, an attempt was mado to cut through a _ heavy plate glass window. This, evidently, failed and a substance resembling glue was spread over the window and covered by a thick brown paper. A large boulder, wrapped in cloth, was thrown through the window, making a large hole, through which the thieves removed a tray laden with diamond rings, etc. They were then evidently disturbed.
David Bookman, the proprietor, is unable to give, an estimate of tho value of the rings stolen.
