The Ladies’ Hockey Club held a most successful dance in the public hall, on Wednesday, visitors being present from all parts. Dancing was indulged in until early morn. , . What might have been a serious accident was narrowly avertod the other evening. A party returning home by car from the hockey dance rail into'a cow on the Sloney Creek" road. The car was turned completely over and the occupants were thrown clear, except the driver, Mr J. Tozer, who was pinned underneath.i When released he wa s at once taken to a doctor who found that lie was badly bruised and shaky. The rest of the party came off without a scratch The car was badly damaged. SHANNON. MEETING OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening. Mr R. L. Tippler occupied the chair. The Minister of Railways wrote regretting that lie could not grant the chamber’s request for a dry dock at the Shannon railway yards.—lt was resolved that a petition from the business firms and others using the railway yards lie obtained and forwarded to the Minister of Railways oil the matter. The secretary, Post and Telegraph Department, wrote stating that the Shannon ofiiee had.been thoroughly inspected and, as the outcome, it had been decided to close at 4.15 p.m. the mail for Palmerston North at present despatched at 2.20 p.m. It had been decided also to erect in the Newtown area a posting box which would be cleared every two days.—Received.

The chamber agreed to support the Manawntu County Council’s action for a suspension bridge over the Maqawatu river in place of the present punt. The AA’ellington Chamber of Commerce advised, in regard to tile Shannon-Eketa-huna road, that, whilst appreciating the advantages of a shortened and alternative road as suggested, the proposition did not appear to bo one of practical politics as yet.—Received. Mr Bartholomew left on AVednesday for Kaikoura, on transfer to the Bank of New Zealand. He is succeeded here by Mr Thurston.

Constable T. Shannon has agaia taken up duties here. The local bowling and croquet greens are undergoing improvements. New flower borders aro being put round the bowling groen, whilst both playing areas will be top-dressed during the noxt fortnight. The local cribbage and euchre club held another pleasant evening on Thursday. Mrs Feetham and Mr Knowles being the winners.

The Moutoa farmers’ carnival committee hold a successfid and most enjoyablo dance in the Parish Hall, on Tuesday evening in support of their queen. The committee were so well pleased with the response that, they have decided to hold fortnightly dances.in Shannon during the carnival. The Maori v. Pakoha match played at Levin on Wednesday was full of interest from the kick off. The Pakeha’s won by 13 points to 11. From the result of the play the selectors should bo able to fieldtfa good fifteen against Manawatu next Saturday week. The local butter factory is advancing Is 7d for May butter-fat.
