TE KAWAU SUB-UNION.

REPRESENTATIVE TRIAL MATCH,

[From Our Rongotea Correspondent.]

With a view to selecting a team to represent tho Te Kawau Sub-Union in tho forthcoming matches, and notably the annual game with the Oroua Union at tho Palmerston North Show, an A v. B trial match was played at Kaimatarau on Wednesday afternoon under excellent conditions. A keen, fast and even game resulted in a draw, tho final scores reading 6 all. Both teams were fully extended, each player being fully tested in a severe and arduous game. On paper the A team fielded the strongest side, but on tho day’s play tho honours were even and. territorially, each side had an equal share. The standard of play was fair, tho form shown by tho opposing frontal divisions being excellent, with tho exception of the poor packing of the A forwards, which allowed tho opposing vanguard to successfully smother tho majority of the black and white’s (A) vanguard movements from the loose and sot scrums. ' The A backs played as well as the opposing black forwards would permit. Their tendency to run across field, thus crowding the wings, was most apparent. A little coaching in the simple procedure of running straight will bo a benefit in future matches. Playing four 20 minute spells, blacks (B’s) were the first to score from a penalty goal by Amadio, who showed all round improved form on the wing. A few minutes later Staitc (A’s) equalled the account by crossing for an unconverted try. Before half-time, however, Ross gave the lead to B’s bv scoring, the attempt at conversion failing. The half-time score read 6 points to 3 in B’s favour. In tho second spell, after much up and down play, A. Sanson (A’s) - scored near tho posts. The attempt to add the major points failed and the garno ended with six points each. Mr T. Goodwin refereed. TE KAWAU v. KIA TOA. On Saturday afternoon the champion Palmerston North team (Kia Toa) will try conclusions with tho 'lc Kawau representatives at Rongotea in a friendly match. It. is needless to elaborate on the, ability of the championship leaders of the Mnnawatu. Local Rugby fans are naturally well acquainted with the reputation of this team and the opportunity of seeing them

in action will be availed of by all. Tho opportunity is also provided of seeing this season’s To Kawau team in action before thoy take tho field against tho Oroua fifteen at tho Palmerston North Show and it will bo safe to say that to-morrows game will be the best \wilnesscd locally and should attract a record attendance. Tho To Kawau fifteen, though light, possess both, youth and sliced, but above all fitness. They can be depended upon to givo a good account of themselves ngainst such a formidable opposition. The rear division' will sadly miss Roy Scott, who is laid up on account illness. x nis champion five-eighth is wished, a s P eedy recovery by his many football friends. The To Kawau team, which wae published in the “Standard” yesterday is requested to assemble in tho school rooihs, Rongotea, at 2 p.m. sharp.

POVERTY BAY BEATS AVANGANUI. Per Pres? Association. GISBORNE, June 10. Nearly 3000 spectators witnessed, the first interprovincial Rugby match of the season here to-day, when Poverty Bay defeated Wanganui by 10 points to 6. The weather conditions and the state of the ground were ideal. , , Except for intermittent periods or spectacular back and forward play, the game was inclined to be slow, through the over-weighting of the home pack by over a stone. Iho visitors were held in tho scrummages and line-outs throughout, the PovertyBay backs seeing plenty of the hall, but in the loose the visitors’ dashing dribbling rushes and passing bouts gave the home backs a hot time defending. Cox, Mini and Beilis were outstanding in tho visitors’ pack, while Peina and Cameron played dashingly in the backs. Narby played a great game at full-back. For Poverty Bay, Langlands and Bennett played a brilliant, heady game in tho backs, and M. AVhaitiri, AVopdward ancUMorrison were the best forwards. Both sides scored all their points in the first spell. From a Poverty Bay passing rush,-Bennett stab-punted and Morrison, following up, dived over. Caulton converted. Off-side play by a Poverty Bay forward enabled Cameron to kick a great goal for Wanganui. Then the Poverty Bay backs started a passing movement, ending in Caulton scoring under the posts. Caulton also converted. Cox scored lor Wanganui from a dribbling rush. As G. Nepia, of Hawke’s Bav, will lie unable to piny-for the North Island in the inter-islanil match at Wellington to-morrow, the position of lullhack will he filled by J. A. Malcolm, of Wellington.
