Y.M.C.A. ACTIVITIES

VIEWED BY ROTARIANS. Guests of tho Y.M.C.A. last evening were a number of Rotarians and their wives, who were given an insight into the activities of the association. The visitors were welcomed by Messrs Jas. Wallace and T. R. Hodder, president and chairman of directors respectively. while Mesdames J. J. Whitehead and Woods, of the ladies’ auxiliary, acted as hostesses. The main feature of the evening was a demonstration in the gymnasium by the young men’s and the ladies’ class, under the supervision of the physical director, Mr C. Woods. The floor was first taken by 50 young men in white flannels and gym. singlets, headed by the leader’s corps of twelve picked gymnasts. After running, dancing and other exercises done while circling the big gymnasium, the class formed up for the various physical exercises. These were followed by games and a demonstration with the iron wands. An invitation has been extended visitors to see this class in action any Monday or Thursday night. The young men are of all types, and some come from long distances in the country after a hard day’s toil on the farm. When the young men had finished their floor work a squad of 30 young ladies from the Wednesday evening class came on in turn, wearing their uniform of black gym. dresses, with red trimmings. The class gave a splendid exhibition of physical exercises, dumb-bell and wand drill, and especially the intricate and graceful gymnastic dancing. It is said that there is no squad of physical culture girls in New Zealand to equal the Y.W.C.A. ladies:’ class in this work; The visitors were most lavish in tlveir applause. Afterwards a number of most interesting basket-ball games were played by both men’s and ladies’ teams.

Supper was served by the ladies auxiliary in the comfortable lounge, where the association’s six-valve wireless set, generously donated by Mr J as. Wallace, was in operation. This evening a billiards match has been arranged with a team from the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
