Dr. and Mrs Bransgrovo have re turned from the South Island.

Mr L. Jackson, formerly of Palmerston North, has been elected president of tho Waikato Hockey Association. Mr William Chalmers, who died at Opouriao, near Whakatane, this week, aged 90 years, had boon a resident of New Zealand since 1801. Messrs D. C. Porno, of the clerical staff at tho Palmerston North railway station, and A. E. Hardy, porter, have resigned from the service to enter into business.

Mr C. G. S. Wilson, of the passenger staff at the local railway station, has been transferred to the relief department at Wellington and leaves at an early date. Dr. H. J. C. Durward, of Palmerston North, purposes leaving for England by tho s.s Turakina early next woek and ho expects to bo away for six or eight months. A cablegram from London states that Sir Arthur Myers, formerly of New Zealand, who suffered an attack ot double pneumonia, has passed the crisis and is slowly improving. Mr A. Fcasey, who recently retired from the railway service on superannuation, has again taken up his residence in Palmerston North. Mr Peasey spent his boyhood days in Palmerston North.

Ex-Inspector McKinnon, whose retirement from the Police Force was announced recently, is again a resident of Palmerston North, and has received a warm welcomo from many friends since returning to this town.

Mr R. H. P. Ronayne has been appointed district engineer, Public Works Department, Wellington, in succession to Mr J. Hanna, who has assumed the duties of inspecting engineer at the head office of tho department.

A Sydney message states that Lord Stradbroke, who has just completed his term as Governor of Victoria, sails by the Aorangi to-day. He will spend some time in the United States before returning to England.

Rev. R. Young, vicar of St. Mark's Church. Carterton, who has retired from active service and is leaving for Christchurch, was farowelled by the parishioners this week and presented with a travelling rug and a wallet of bank-notes.

Messrs A. G. Wansbrough (inspecting engineer of tho Railway Department) and T. Snow (railway land officer) who havo been in Palmerston North on departmental business, returned to Wellington this morning by tho Main Trunk express.

A meeting of members of the Morrinsvillo Presbyterian Church decied to extend a call to the Rev. J. H. Starnes, at present relieving in Auckland. Mr Starnes, who has seen six years’ missionary work in Bolivia, has just completed training at Knox College, where he recently passed tor a degree.

Mr J. W. Card has been returned unopposed as Mayor of Featherston. Mr Card lost his office a few days ago owing to the fact that the logal firm of which he is a partner had had business relations with the Borough Council. Mr Lawson appeared at Court and received money on behalf of the council, and it was held that, though Mr Card hud had no actual connection with the matter, he as a partner was involved.

A social to bid farewell to tile Rev. and Mrs Oscar Michelseri, who have been in New Zealand on furlough for almost a year and are returning this week to the New Hebrides mission field was held by the Auckland Prebytery and the Prebyterian Association. Mr Michelsen is returning to mission work in spite of the fact that ho has been in the field for 49 years and is now 81 years of age. Mr Lex Squires, a son of Mr W. "W. Squires, dentist, of Nelson, who was seriously injured in January last in the AVairarapa district through the accidental discharge of a rifle, has so far improved in health as to be able to arrive back in Nelson. Mr Squires, at the time of the unfortunate accident, was the guest of General Hart, of Masterton, as part of his Nelson College vacation.

There passed away at Casltlelcjiff, Wanganui, on Monday, Mr Jones Murphy, of Wellington, aged 8b years. The late Mr Murphy was born in Auckland and was one of the fast diminishing band of pioneers. He took part in the Maori war and could relate some stirring incidents of the pioneering days, For a time he resided in Dunedin and for 17 years was associated with the Dunedin Fire Brigade, part of which time he was captain. At tho time of his death he was on a visit to his daughter, Mrs Oliver. Deceased leaves a son (Mr Herbert Murphy, of Wellington) and daughter (Mrs J. Oliver, of Castleclilf, Wanganui) and a sister (Mrs George Coley, senr., of Foxton) to mourn their loss

Constable P. McEntee, of Whangarei, and formerly of the district office at tho Palmerston North station, was a visitor to this centre during the early portion of the week. Constable McEntee was transferred to tho northern town short notice and the opportunity was taken on his return by his former comrades and members of tho Court stafE to make him the recipient of a pair of military brushes and shaving outfit. Senior-Detective Quirke, in making tho presentation, eulogised the work of their old comrade and spoke of the good fellowship which had always existed between Constable McEntee and tho other members at the local station. Sergeant T. Moriarity endorsed tho remarks, which were supported by cheers Constable IVlcEntee, in returning thanks, stated that he had been sorry to sever relationships with his friends at tho local office, but health reasons had necessitated it. Mrs McEntee and family accompanied Constable McEntee north on AYednesday evening.
