One of Sydney’s leading papers published a day or uvo ago a piquant little paragraph which shows that the ways of pubtie departments are sometimes hard to understand (writes a Sydney correspondent;. The hospital at lion, bala (N.S.W.) forwarded to one ot the Go vernment departments a requisition for one tank, hit by 31 : t. The olticials at the hospital were staggered, not only by the promptitude with which the order was fulfilled, but also by the very liberal interpretation of the requisition, for there were dispatched to them, not merely one 6ft by 31t iron tank, but no fewer than t>3 tanks, without a word being asked about the extraordinary number apparently demanded. As it pointed out, only a Government department could do a tiling like that and survive. The story reminds us of a case in 'Wellington some years ago, where (says the Auckland Star) a certain Government department, on being requisitioned for a pieco of linoleum, Dlt by 6ft, supplied one which measured exactly Din by Gin. In this case also the recipient was staggered, but indignation rather than surprise was the accompanying emotion which ho registered.
