GOLF TOURNAMENT

RESULTS OF S-ECOND ROUND. YOUNG PLAYER’S GOOD SHOWING. The second 'round of tlie Manawatu Golf Club’s Easter tournament was decided yosterday afternoon under very fair weather conditions. There wero no surprises in the championship but in the second round of tho Hokowhitu Handicap the boy playor, Louis Seifert (9) beat Retemey'or (8) of Hawke’s Bay, at tho nineleenth, liis win in the initial round; it is interesting to note, also being at the extra hole. The young exponent on tho outward journey held tho “colonel” at bay over tho first four holes and was one up at the turn.

Ekstedt, continuing to play sound golf, easily beat MacMillan in the championship, doing the 18 holes in 76 (bogey 79). He was four up at the turn and took the next two holes 5 —6, 4—5, tho twelfth and thirteenth being halved in threes. Ekstedt’s run out, with the bogey figures in parentheses, road: —4 (4), 4 (5), 5 (5), 5 (5), 3 (3), 4 (4), 5 (5), 3 (3), 5 (6)—38 (40). One well known club official who is a competitor at the tournament, experienced an unhappy afternoon yesterday. Playing to the last hole he was confronted with an awkward lay close to the northern fence of the club houso. Essaying to clear to the eighteenth, he landed on tho far side of the enclosed putting green. A fresh ball dropped short into the enclosure, and playing a third he struck the fence a few feet away and gave it up. It was a classical example of the exasperation which tho gamo can afford.

O. H. Druco holed out a putt of fully 20 feet on the last green yesterday and his opponent, who was nearby as far distant from the hole, endeavoured to emulate his example and very nearly succeeded, lipping the rim.

Due, probably, to the unfavourable season, some of the greens are showing patches a little bare of turf, but they are nono the less playing well and the fairways and course generally are very well conditioned. Tho putting green attracts comparatively fow until late in tho afternoon when most arc “in.” Then there is a constant string of “putters” endeavouring to improve their finishing strokes.
